GRANTHAM florist

Grantham is a town in the South Kesteven district and the county of Lincolnshire. It is on east-central England and it lies on the River Witham. The origin of the town’s name is uncertain. It appeared as early as 1086 in the Domesday Book as ‘Grantham’ but was also recorded as Grandham, Granham, and Graham. The name of the town is the origin of the Scottish surname and also often used as a middle name, Graham.

Grantham is near the ancient Old North Road. It was the site where Oliver Cromwell first won over the Royalists during the English Civil War in 1643. The town is also the birthplace of former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and is where Sir Isaac Newton attended King’s School. The town is also known for its gingerbread biscuits, which was first made by William Eggleston in 1740

Today, Grantham has a population of 44,559 people wherein 21,628 (49 percent) are males and 22,931 (51 percent) are females.

It has several schools and colleges in the area. One of them is Grantham College which opened in 1948. Kesteven and Grantham Girls’ School (KGGS) is a grammar school for girls that was established in 1910. KGGS was founded by Miss H Gladys Williams. Before its establishment, Kesteven Local Education Authority founded the Grantham Institute, which accepted girls. KGGS has academy status.

Meanwhile, The King’s School is a grammar school for boys. It has been on the same site and its history can be traced back to 1329. This school has academy status.

Two other schools in Grantham are The Priory Ruskin Academy and Grantham Preparatory School. The Priory Ruskin Academy is a co-educational secondary school and sixth form with academy status that was formed in 2010. The school is a merger of Central Technology & Sports College and The Grantham Church High School. On the other hand, Grantham Preparatory School is an independent preparatory.

Grantham has several sights and places of interest. The first one is Angel and Royal, which is the oldest surviving English inn. Originally, it was built as a hostel for the Knights Templar.

East to the town’s church is Grantham House which is a National Trust Property. This townhouse was built in 1380 and is now listed as a Grade I building while its Wall and Doorway for the riverside garden are Grade II listed. In the 16th century, it was known as the ‘Hall House.’ Then, there is Grantham Guildhall. This is a municipal building on St Peter’s Hill that was built to replace the ageing guildhall and jail.

St Wulfram’s Church in Grantham is a parish church that has been a Grade I listed building since 8th of May 1950. Grantham Museum, also in St Peter’s Hill, houses the public library. It was partly funded by the Carnegie UK Trust which was continuing Andrew Carnegie’s project of building libraries across the country.
