NEWARK-ON-TRENT florist

Newark-on-Trent, also known as Newark, is a market town in Nottinghamshire. It is part of the Newark and Sherwood district in east-central England. It is now a major centre for antiques.

Newark is situated at the junction of two ancient highways; the Great North Road and the Fosse Way. At the same time, it is on the crossing of two major railway lines; the East Coast Main Line and the Nottingham to Lincoln Line.

The name ‘Newark’ was first mentioned in the Cartulary of Eynsham Abbey in Oxfordshire. In 1054 to 1057, it appeared as ‘Newercha’ and ‘Niweweorche’ in about 1075 to 1092. In the Domesday Book of 1086, it was ‘Newerche’ which means ‘new work’ or ‘new fort.’

In the Middle Ages, Newark’s cloth industry was the main enterprise of the town. Now, it serves as a small engineering centre with supporting agricultural industries.

Newark is one of the most attractive towns on River Trent. The town has a picturesque ruined castle overlooking the river. It also has a cobbled market square and several well-maintained old buildings.

Newark has a population of 39,635 wherein 49 percent (19,582) are males and 51 percent (20,053) are females.

Newark has two schools; Newark and Sherwood College and The Newark Academy. The college provides courses at various levels while The Newark Academy, which is formerly The Grove School, is a mixed secondary school.

Newark also has a local football club. Newark Town FC is the local club that is also the members of the Central Midlands League North Division.

As for sights to see, there is Newark Castle which was destroyed during the English Civil War. Millgate Museum is a Folk Museum with displaying the artefacts and photographs of old Newark. There is also the parish church of St Mary Magdalene which was not completed until over 300 years after construction began in 1160.

The church is one of England’s finest with a tower and spire 246 feet high. The towering spire from the Norman period is visible all over town. Meanwhile, Newark Torc is silver and gold Iron Age torc that resembles that of the Snettisham Hoard.

Newark also has the Newark Town Hall Museum and Art Gallery that features outstanding pieces of Georgian architecture. It has a ballroom which is one of the finest public assembly rooms in the country of its period. Its museum is on the first floor and showcases Roman pottery and several Civil War relics. The art gallery features paintings, sketches and sculptures by both local and international artists.

Newark has the Newark Garden Show which is a gardening extravaganza event that celebrates the best of gardening, home, and lifestyle. Here you will find several indoor and outdoor trade stands that sell unique garden gazebos, greenhouses and arbours to gardening sundries and hundreds of other products from over 100 leading exhibitors. You can find everything you need for your home or garden in here.

There is also the Norwell Nurseries and Gardens with over 2,500 different plants. The gardens have a mix of rare and unusual plants and you are free to look round whenever the nursery is open.
